Definition

The pleasant, earthy scent that accompanies the first rain after a dry spell. It is produced by plant oils, bacterial spores, and a compound called geosmin released from the soil.

Etymology

From Greek petra (stone) + ichor (the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods); coined in 1964.
